The classically-derivative voice leading is, of course, entirely intentional and a key component of my decades-long struggle to demonstrate serial theory's potential suitability for expression through traditional forms. The overwhelming resort to four-voice (or fewer) harmonic constructions is generally an unfortunate mathematical necessity when dividing strictly-defined 12-note blocks into coherent and useful progressions. The two methods together lend the whole an air of simplicity and transparency that belies the persistently dissonant atmosphere usually so unwonted in triadic compositions.

After my first complete audit of the entire work in advanced draft, I put my head in my hands and just cried - not like a baby, but like an old man satisfied and exhausted by the trials of a long life and extended industry. Because the simplicity and transparency of the writing perfectly expose the authenticity of the one word that best describes this concerto as a whole: brutality. It is a fit word for the world we currently tolerate.
