As winter bleakness approaches every year, I always console myself by imagining being cooped up indoors for days or weeks at a time will at least encourage increased productivity. Then the freezing darkness descends and sucks every last particle of energy from my brain. I could only write a few measures per day - if even that - during January and February. A month ago, in early March, there were only 90 seconds left to compose on this piece; and the manuscript just sat there neglected in a minimized window the whole time.

It wasn't a fickle inspirational Muse. A Muse is nothing more than the flow state emerging from disciplined application of craft. It was winter, sucking ambition from every pore in my body.

That said, protracted labor here seems to have brought forth something altogether as clear, simple and uncomplicated as anything by Schubert: albeit in no sense anywhere near as lyrical - and repeated complex meters aside.
