Herewith extending profound apologies to all cellists - past, present, and future: my two sonatas now extant for this instrument must demonstrate conclusively that I have no business attempting to write for it. I would like to offer lyrical and compellingly dramatic periods like Beethoven, Mendelssohn or Brahms, but can only produce twisted skeins of variously combined serial permutations, it would seem. A more prideful artisan might point to the extra degree of difficulty involved in juggling entire tone rows simultaneously, but I prefer simply to hang my head and frankly admit incompetency with regret.

In any event, should anyone in the future happen to observe me drafting a sonata-allegro movement for any combination of instruments in 9/8 time, please - please, please - ask me what in Debussy's name I think I'm trying to do. Thanks in advance.
